OPAC stands for Online Public Access Catalog. 

First of all, let us learn what a catalog is. Catalog in the Library is a list of information about the collections that a library owns. Catalog in marketing and business terms is a complete list of items typically in systematic order. Catalogs are very helpful in many kinds of organizations mainly because it serves as a directory of information listed in systematic manner. OPAC is on the other hand, an online bibliography of collections. It's an effective bibliographic tool since it contains qualitative and quantitative data.

So why is it a big factor for us to know what an OPAC is?

OPAC is like SOUP. 

OPAC is Simple.
OPAC is Useful.
OPAC is Online
OPAC is Public.

Schools, Private Institutions, Government Agencies spend millions for an OPAC database? 

Tho some of them can be accessible on the web or in the internet open for public.
